King of Potato (Kickstarter Preview)

Updated: Mar 4, 2021

King of Potato

Players: 2-6

Age: 14+

Play Time: 20 minutes

Overview:

King of Potato is king of the hill style game, in which players play as king's guard trying to return the potato king. The player who has King Potato in their possession at the end of their turn, receives a victory point. The first player to 3 wins the game and avoids being made into French fries. King of Potato launches today on Kickstarter.

Main Mechanics:

  • Hand management

  • Take That

Components Review: I received a pre-production sample of the game which means that everything is handmade rather than machine produced, so I won't necessarily be reviewing the feel of things. That being said, the box does looks good. It is a bit big for what I received, but maybe that's to leave room for an insert, expansions or stretch goals. The card art looks polished and really close to final. I really like the design of the cards. The card backs are attractive and will have a white border which will look great. The card fronts are really clean. The character art and names are clear, and the symbols make sense, and the text is easily understandable (though it will be bigger). This is a card game, so that's really all there is to judge. From what I've seen with pre-production, things seem to be on track. It would be awesome to see some stretch goals for point trackers.

Gameplay Review:

King of Potato is played over several rounds where players are trying to end their turn with the king in their hand. During their turn, the active player will choose whether to play a card or to pass. Upon playing or passing, opponents have the opportunity to play "fast cards" to try to steal or remove the king. If the player has not passed, they then have an opportunity to play another card to try to counter their opponents move. Play continues this way until all player pass. If the active player still has King Potato, they receive a point, and the next player in player order takes their turn. The game continues until a player has 3 points.

Final Thoughts:

This game was really hard to judge. The game did have a "reverse Exploding Kittens" feel to it, which made it clear that it probably shines at higher player counts (the more people playing, the more king-of-the-hill, back-and-forth action. Due to the pandemic however, my wife and I didn't get to test this with a group, and only played 2 player games. Even in our two player game, there was some exciting player interaction, so I can imagine that would increase with more players. Go to kingofpotato.com for more info.
