The Game of Wolf

The Game of Wolf (2019)

Produced by: Gray Matter Games

Players: 4-12

Age: 14+

Play Time: 30-45 minutes

Overview:

The Game of Wolf is a trivia game that takes place over three rounds. On your turn after hearing the category you choose whether to approach the questions as a lone wolf or to select another player and form a pack. You/your pack then compete against all other players to correctly answer the most out of 5 questions, with a tie breaker if necessary.

Main Mechanics:

  • Trivia

  • Cooperation

Components Review: The Game of Wolf is very straight forward and all of the components are pretty standard, though this is not really an issue as the game takes place around the table, rather than with pieces. The game comes with plenty of question cards, and the font is easy enough to read. The white boards are what you would expect. They aren't incredible, but clean well if you use a napkin or tissue. The box is sturdy and fits everything well, with some room to spare, which with any trivia game it's always nice to expand the questions, something I would love to see with this game. Overall, the components are standard, which is fine and isn't an issue. I see this game holding up for a long time.

Gameplay Review:

The Game of Wolf is really fun and accessible, and it solves a lot of the problems with most trivia games... not knowing the answers and losing by a lot. By allowing players to select help when they want or need it, it makes answers questions more accessible and allows you to score points, even if your partner does all the work. This works really well because it keeps all of the players within a decent margin. On top of that, each question has parts, ranging in difficulty, giving each team a chance, no matter how small. I was really happy with this game. The only problem I would for see is running through the questions after a few plays, though this is an issue with all trivia games. An expansion box or paid app with a growing list of categories would be welcomed.

Final Thoughts:

I REALLY enjoyed The Game of Wolf. As stated above, this is the best trivia game I've played, which my game group agreed. What I enjoyed most about the game is what happened afterwards. After we played, my group wanted to keep answering questions and the game turned into a drinking game, both 1v1 and on teams, where the loser would have to drink. The game is absolutely fun on its own, but the way play naturally continued even after the game ended demonstrates just how fun the style of play is. HUGE thank you to Gray Matter Games for sending it my way.
